The Challenge:

Improving Healthcare Accessibility for Rural Students and Staff

In Oklahoma’s rural counties, students and staff often face significant barriers to accessing timely medical care, including financial constraints and long travel distances. These challenges lead to untreated health issues, decreased school attendance, and increased strain on families.

The Approach:

Expanding School-Based Telehealth with AMD Technology

Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center (EOMC) implemented a school-based telehealth program designed to bridge the healthcare gap in rural communities. Starting as a pilot in 2018, the program has grown to include 14 schools and a local college, offering remote specialist services for minor illnesses such as infections, allergies, and skin conditions.
The telehealth program uses AMD’s AGNES telehealth platform with connected medical devices, including digital stethoscopes and otoscopes, enabling providers to deliver clinical-quality care remotely. By prioritizing simplicity, the program ensures minimal burden on school IT staff while maintaining seamless operation.

“Our collaboration with AMD has been essential in making our school-based telehealth program effective. Their technology enables us to provide timely care to students across rural areas, overcoming barriers like distance and transportation. It’s been a key factor in expanding healthcare access for our community.

Tiffany Griffis, CEO, Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center

The Outcome:

Reduced Absenteeism and Improved Community Health

The program’s impact has been transformative for schools and families. Students now receive care on-site, leading to fewer missed school days and better health outcomes. Parents save time and avoid the need for long trips to medical appointments, alleviating financial and logistical burdens. The program also supports school staff, ensuring a healthier environment for the entire educational community.

EOMC’s telehealth initiative demonstrates how rural healthcare challenges can be effectively addressed through innovative technology and strong community partnerships, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
