Delivering Immediate Access to Remote Specialists Has Resulted in 90 Percent Patient Compliance to Follow-Up Pediatric Appointments within the First Year of their Telemedicine Program
Chelmsford, MA, – February 17, 2015 –AMD Global Telemedicine Inc. (AMD), the pioneer of clinical Telemedicine Encounter Management Solutions (TEMS)™helps the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine remove barriers associated with pediatric follow-up appointments for uninsured children. The University of Miami Pediatric Mobile Clinic (UMPMC) is using AMD’s Portable TeleClinic to provide immediate access to remote specialist care and increase patient compliance to follow-up appointments.
The UMPMC delivers primary care to nearly 3,000 children a year who are without health insurance. AMD’s Portable TeleClinic has empowered the mobile clinic with the technology to conduct specialty care and consults with remote physicians, directly from inside the mobile clinic and eliminates the need for the patients to travel to appointments. Specialties serviced by UMPMC with telemedicine include; dermatology, cardiology, nutrition, and coming next month – obesity management.
“Our uninsured patients were faced with too many barriers to get to their specialist appointments because it meant they needed to travel long distances and would incur additional costs, so most of them were simply not showing up,” commented Lisa Gwynn, D.O., Medical Director of the Pediatric Mobile Clinic. “By bringing the remote specialist to our mobile unit via telemedicine, we brought our compliance rate up significantly from 30 percent to 90 percent, and more importantly our patients are benefiting from all-inclusive care.”
The Portable TeleClinic system, powered by AMD’s AGNES Interactive software, is a fully functional exam station used for clinical telemedicine appointments and video conferencing consults. Medical devices such as an examination camera, otoscope, stethoscope and 12-lead ECG are also integrated to support the requirements of each medical specialty.
The University of Miami Pediatric Mobile Clinic was established in 1992 as a response to Hurricane Andrew. Services currently provided include; well-visits, sports physicals, immunizations, management of chronic conditions, urgent care, mental health, and social work. The UMPMC is funded by the Children’s Health Fund, Verizon Foundation and the Florida Department of Health.
